Know Your Rights
What's Been Said About Us?

Know Your Rights (or lack thereof)

Warning: There is nothing funny about this page, but please, read it anyway as it contains very important information that you may not know.

As you may already know, all 4 members of the WorkOrSpoon team lost their regular corporate jobs simply because upper management took offense to this site. Now, most of you are probably thinking (as we did) "They can't do that! Sue the shit out of them!". Sadly, my friends, they CAN do that. They can do whatever the hell they want because they're a corporation and workers have no rights. If you work in the private sector (non-government) job, you're most likely employed "At-Will", meaning that a company can fire you 'at will' for any reason they want, or no reason at all.

If your boss likes a different sports team than you - You can be fired
If your boss doesn't like the color of your shirt - You can be fired
If your boss is a Democrat, and you voted Republican - You can be fired.

The vast majority of people who've heard our story had no idea that not even their Constitutional rights are upheld in the workplace. Since our website reaches a large audience of people in the American workplace, we wanted to share this information and offer some resources for those who wish to know more.

American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
The ACLU is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedication to preserving "the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to all people in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States." They have a great deal of information on Workplace Rights.

Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)
OSHA is a government funded agency dedicated to ensuring a safe and healthful workplace free from occupational hazards. "You have the right to a safe workplace. OSHA requires employers to provide a workplace that is free of serious recognized hazards."
www.osha.gov

Employment Law at Nolo.com
Nolo is a large online resource for law information to help educate people about their own personal legal matters.  They have a wealth of information on employment law.

FindLaw
A website designed to help you search for an attorney. If you were fired unlawfully do to discrimination (such as race, gender, religion) and need a lawyer, this is a good place to look.

There are 80 million people employed in the private sector of the American economy. Only about 20 million of these are union members protected from unjust dismissal by collective bargaining agreements. The remaining 60 million are employed "at will".

"At will" employees serve at the unfettered discretion of employers. They can be fired for any reason, even a bad one, or for no reason at all.
